Preamble
Shown here is the extensive list of author’s notes and other musings on the untold tales of CHS, all for your perusal! Development notes, fun facts, concepts that didn’t make the cut—it’s all here, baby! You can use the navigation here to jump to specific sections, or click here to go back! Obvious warning though, these WILL contain spoilers for the fic itself, so make sure to read the chapters beforehand if you don’t wanna be spoiled!
The Fic Itself:
(The Life & Legacy of Master Eon) (Eruptor's Sick Day) (Chihiro's Travels)
The Life & Legacy of Master Eon
-
Master Eon’s origins as a humble farm boy were inspired by the 2013 Annual, where he notes in an article that if he hadn’t been a portal master, he probably would’ve spent his time farming. Given that, I imagine he came from a humble, farming-based background, as many heroes did.
-
As I mentioned in the original FFnet mirror, Era is not in any way connected to Strykore from Skylanders Academy; she technically predates his existence by, at minimum, three or four years. Eagle-eyed readers might recall that Holo-Eon briefly mentioned her in the Dragon’s Peak two-parter, and now, you’ll get to meet her for real!
-
Eon’s fear of falcons is referenced from Air Strike’s backstory.
-
Nattybumpo’s appearance is also drawn from the 2013 Annual, more specifically from how Master Eon describes him in the aforementioned article. I personally headcanon that he was a Life Element specialist, hence the heavily nature-themed getup.
-
As also mentioned in the FFnet mirror, Nattybumpo recruited the Swap Force here as opposed to Master Eon. Personally, I always found it extremely boring that Eon recruited like, 90% of the Skylanders, and decided to divy them up more to shake things up a little.
-
Master Eon feeling the portal calling for him to meant to foreshadow his eventual awakening as a portal master. For now though, he’s just the ordinary boy.
Eruptor’s Sick Day
-
As mentioned in the original description, this takes place between the Life & Tech source arcs of CHS, hence why Chihiro is extra worried about Eruptor (still dealing with lingering fears of not being able to protect her friends) and why she’s so focused on training (obsessed with growing stronger).
-
I mainly wrote this because I wanted to write some smaller stuff to get out of a rut and focus more on Chihiro’s friendship with the Skylanders, so I killed two birds with one stone.
-
Also, in a weirdly fitting version of the “fic author’s curse”, I got a stomach virus twice while working on this one-shot (first during the outline process, and then during the actual writing process), so I feel Eruptor on a spiritual level here.
-
Beautiful Remedy Songstress is a reference to Suite Precure, which would have been the currently-airing Precure season in real life at the time this story took place.
-
The named board games that Chihiro names off are references to Monopoly, Sorry, Clue, and Scrabble in that order.
-
Originally Eruptor would have gradually gotten better instead of taking a sudden dip, but then I got sick with the second stomach virus and it gave me inspiration to have him get sick again and use Chihiro helping him as an excuse to have them talk.
-
Also decided to use their talk to delve into Eruptor’s backstory some. I got a bit of the idea while listening to “Youth” by Glass Animals, and the idea just sort of came to me.
Chihiro’s Travels
-
Mountain View, California is a real place, and the location of Vicarious Visions’ old physical office! That being said, the middle school Eugenie and Liam attend is fictional.
-
Some of you may remember Hearth to Heart, the one-shot I wrote about Eugenie and Flameslinger having a heart-to-heart about their shitty family lives, and a slight introduction to one of my recurring Skylanders fan characters: Leon Woodrow, Eugenie’s older brother who left home the moment he turned eighteen and never looked back. I see this as a spiritual sequel or successor to it, one that gives a little more insight into Leon’s side of the story and a slightly happier end for the siblings.
-
Bookface is a Facebook parody, if it’s not obvious.
-
Chihiro knows she’s normally not supposed to use magic around normies or blow her cover, but had a “Screw the rules, I’m doing what’s right!” moment when she heard about Eugenie and Leon’s problems and wanted to help them out.
-
There’s lots of air-related imagery here (Liam’s parents being pilots, North Wind being the name of Eugenie and Liam’s middle school and having a lot of sky-related aesthetics), for a reason I will not spill on lol.
-
Eugenie is a bit younger here than she is in canon; more specifically, I see her as being about eleven years old at this point in the story.
