Basic Info: Full name is Qamar Pierre Adams, French Algerian, 16 years old, star sign is Taurus, aroace + unlabeled gender (He/They pronouns), Dark Element Specialist, character motif is fantasy heroes.
Family: Qamar’s family consists of his father Josué Adams, mother Noella Bernard, and his younger siblings Michaël and Bushra Adams, who are elementary school-aged twins. Josué and Noella had a particularly tumultuous relationship that culminated in a very messy divorce when Qamar was about nine or ten, and the two tend to be largely uninvolved in their kids’ lives, leaving Qamar to act as something of a third caretaker to his beloved younger siblings. Whether his parents really do care about their kids but are still struggling to grapple with the dissolution of their relationship or if they just view their kids as a remnant of something they’d like to leave behind, Qamar isn’t certain, and he also isn’t certain that he particularly cares anymore. As you can guess from that, his relationship with his parents is incredibly strained, put nicely. Conversely, however, Qamar cares deeply for his younger siblings, and wants nothing more than to take them all away once he can, no matter how unrealistic or far away that dream may be.
Personality: Qamar has had a reputation for being a crybaby since he was young, always freaking out at the smallest things and bursting into tears at even the slightest inconvenience. As much as he hates it, it’s not something he could really help—he’d always been a sensitive soul ever since he was young, and growing up with parents who’d blow up at each other at even the slightest inconvenience didn’t exactly help matters. This nature of his means that fighting bad guys and going on big adventures is more of a nightmare to him than a dream, and he prefers to stay on the sidelines and help however he can there. Though, often he wishes he was braver and less prone to tears, as he feels that this makes him and inconvenience and a burden to those around him.
Despite all this, he’s an incredibly compassionate and caring kid who wants nothing more than the best for the people around him, and is quick to help out however he can. He’s very attuned to others’ feelings and quick to pick up on when things are bugging people—and it also makes it very hard to lie to him, as he’s quick to pick up on how you really feel and think. Even if you act like you don’t want his help, whenever you need him, he’ll be there with a shoulder to cry on and a warm drink in hand.
Life on Earth: Qamar’s parents used to have a happy relationship, they used to seem like they’d never fall out of love with each other, it seemed like everything was okay... At least, that’s what he always claimed. But, as Qamar grew older, the strains of living had taken their toll on his parents. Their passions weren’t exactly paying the bills, the jobs they had taken on to pay those bills were little more than busywork, and they had both started to butt heads on how their child should be raised, on who should do the chores, on everything underneath the sun. They tried hard to salvage their love, doing whatever they could, even having another child as they wrongfully believed that it would save their relationship... But things ultimately didn’t work out, and when Qamar was about nine or ten, his parents split for good.
And poor Qamar was ultimately caught in the center of all this, whether he was forced into hiding to avoid his parents’ arguments or helping care for his siblings as they fought. And after the divorce, his parents grew incredibly distant—both of them provided for all their basic necessities as they always did, but other than that they rarely stayed at home and never seemed to acknowledge their kids whenever they did. Maybe whatever love they had for their children was clouded by their grief over the dissolution of their relationship, maybe they resented their kids for being what remained of a failed love, who knew. But either way, Qamar realized quickly that it was up to him to care for himself and the twins, and quickly adjusted into the role of a third caretaker - between schoolwork, he helped his younger siblings with their own homework and got them ready for school, he made all their meals and put them to bed, took care of laundry and cleaning, all in the same way a parent would. It’s no exaggeration to say he grew up quickly in response, or that he resented his parents just a little or envied his classmates who had good relationships with their parents. If anything, all he wanted was to take his siblings and run away...
Arriving in Skylands and Life There: One day, as he came home from school, Qamar had found out that the twins had gotten in trouble at their school, and that his mother was absolutely furious, berating them for causing her so much trouble... And, completely enraged by this, he had snapped at her, calling her out for being largely uninvolved in their lives and asking her if she hated them for being the remainder of her failed relationship. Things got intense very quickly, and it ended with Qamar’s mother kicking him out, telling him to stay with his father if he hated her so much. Luckily, a neighbor of Qamar’s had found him and after hearing about what had happened, allowed him to stay at their place for the night while he waited for things to blow over. Qamar struggled to fall asleep, wondering how his siblings were doing or what he was going to say to her when he went back home... But ultimately, he didn’t need to, because as he slept that night a portal opened below him, and he woke up in Skylands, right in the center of Skylanders Academy! The first few days there were particularly rough on him, as not only was he worried sick about his siblings and stuck in a strange world with strange people and creatures he didn’t know, but on top of all that, he had communication issues to boot—while the other Portal Masters were all from varying parts of the United States and all spoke English, a language close enough to Common Skylandian, Qamar was from France and only spoke very rudimentary English, meaning he struggled to understand others. But, thanks to a translation device invented by Drobot, Qamar finally found himself able to communicate with the others and slowly bonded with them. Still, Qamar quickly found that fighting is far from his forte and instead chose to stay on the sidelines, helping out at home base however he can... Though each day, he wishes he could do more, if only to not burden the others and get back to his siblings faster. Perhaps this wish is what gave him power over shadows, allowing him to make himself and others disappear in the blink of an eye—a skill that gives him a unique advantage in battle, and a bit more confidence in his abilities.
Powers: Qamar’s magic is more defensive in nature than offensive, with his shadow manipulation allowing him to completely cloak himself and others from view—he can turn people invisible to the eye, or simply use thick shadows to obscure the vision and work from behind their sanctuary. He can even consolidate them into objects like shields and use them as added defense! He’s not particularly good at offensive spells by comparison, preferring to rely on his laser crossbow in the rare occasion where he does have to fight.
Relationships:
George: The two share a bit of kinship due to them both being older siblings with younger sibs still stuck on Earth that they desperately want to get back too, but George can’t help but feel a bit sorry for Qamar. George himself was blessed with a fairly loving and caring family, and his decision to help care for his younger sister was entirely of his own volition—he can’t imagine being in a situation like Qamar’s where it was more or less something he was forced to do by the situation life handed to him.
Oscar: As an older sibling himself, Qamar has a bit of a soft spot for Oscar and is super protective of him... Even if most of the time it ends with Oscar protecting Qamar instead. Regardless, the two do have a sort of sibling-like friendship, and Oscar tends to come to Qamar whenever he needs some help with more down to earth matters.
Cassidy (OC): The two of them are quite the odd duo, but are super close friends nonetheless. Qamar admires Cassidy greatly, because in a sense, she’s everything he wishes he was—brave, talented, confident, loved... But underneath it all, he understands the pressure and standards she puts herself up to, and always tries his best to be there for her, whatever the situation.
Molly (OC): Generally more acquaintances than friends, though he’s mentored her in studies of the Dark Element here and there. She finds his manipulation of shadows pretty cool and enjoys the quiet moments she spends helping out at home base with him. Though, she wishes he wasn’t so quick to panic all the time.
Hugo: As he spends a lot of time hanging around the Academy and other bases of operation, Hugo and Qamar have become fairly good friends and partners in organization. Between the two of them, they keep the entire base-side operation running for everyone on the field, and while Hugo tries to help Qamar understand that his contributions there are just as valued, Qamar still feels as though he should be doing more. But, nonetheless he does appreciate having Hugo to talk to and seek advice from.
The Skylanders: They appreciate all the work he does back at the base and when he can come out in the field, and though they’ve gotten a little better at communicating, Qamar still prefers to keep his distance. Sonic Boom, however, he’s fairly close to as she basically came to act as his mother-figure when she found out about his strained relationship with his parents back on Earth.
Trivia and Voiceclaims:
- Qamar actually has a pretty obscure origin to his character - he was initially a hypothetical concept for the protagonist of the Skylanders TV show pitched to Moonscoop/Splash Entertainment back in 2011, but was ultimately reused as a Ring of Heroes OC because I needed a Dark Element portal master and wouldn’t have used him otherwise. His initial incarnation was similar appearance wise, but in terms of personality was more plucky, curious and upbeat, mirroring the traditional human protagonists of similar shows - it got overhauled for his current incarnation to add a bit more variety in character personalities - and he was initially Blank/Non-Elemental rather than a Dark Element specialist.
- His character design as a whole is a nod to his origins - his name, which is Arabic for “Moon,” was picked as a nod to Moonscoop, the crescent moons in his attire are modeled after the ones from the Moonscoop logo, his portal master attire was modeled after the fashions of Code Lyoko and Hero 108, Moonscoop’s most well-known shows, him being French and living in France is a nod to Moonscoop being based in France, and his hair was meant to have a bit of a crescent moon motif as well
- His Portal Master Skill icon was reused and recolored from a skill icon for Enigma.
